The Bachelor of Paramedicine is offered as a two-year, full time (fast-track) program, at two of our campuses, Hobart, Tasmania and Rozelle, NSW. Throughout your degree, you'll have the chance to learn skills in small groups, and then apply what you learn to professional experience placements within ambulance services.

You’ll be taught by qualified paramedics, both on our staff and through our connections with the local healthcare sector. We offer a low student/teacher ratio during your clinical practical experiences, which provides you with individual attention and support throughout your studies.

Quota for domestic Tasmanian students

At least 75% of domestic places will be offered to Tasmanians for the Hobart Campus intake only. This is defined as:

  • School leaver applicants who have completed a Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) or International Baccalaureate (IB) at a Tasmanian High School or Secondary College within 5 years of the course commencement date. 
  • Current resident in Tasmania.
  • 1 Interpret and apply the disciplinary body of knowledge to contemporary paramedic practice
  • 2 Provide safe person-centred care informed by the principles of evidence-based and reflective practice in diverse settings
  • 3 Practice the discipline of paramedicine through the use of psychomotor, interpersonal, interprofessional and clinical decision-making skills
  • 4 Practice the profession in a legal, ethical, sustainable and culturally safe manner

Throughout your studies you will have a wide range of integrated and optional practical experience opportunities. These include:

  • Access simulation equipment in both Hobart and Sydney to develop patient assessment and management skills, clinical reasoning, practical skills, communication, teamwork, and leadership in a supported environment.
  • Undertake interdisciplinary learning activities with students studying other health courses, such as nursing and medicine. This includes collaborating in classes and practicals to build inter-disciplinary appreciation.
  • Participate in community engagement activities such as Open Day to develop confidence engaging a range of audiences, and help improve both understanding of paramedicine, and broader health literacy

Within this course you will undertake three Professional Experience Placement (PEP) units, one in your first year, and two in your second year. Each unit offers 144 hours of placement experience, with a focus on communication, professionalism, safe practice and leadership.

In these placements you can gain experience across both metropolitan and rural settings, with diverse patient groups, working in ambulance stations as well as other health facilities such as aged care and hospitals.

As part of the first placement unit, you will have the opportunity to undertake an additional week-long placement in an aged-care facility to expand your skills. With Australia’s rapidly ageing population, this is an ever-increasing need healthcare professionals need to be prepared for.

In the second placement you may have the opportunity to undertake placement with one of our international partners. Our students previously completed placements in Nepal, Timor Leste, England, United States, Vanuatu, and Thailand. Places are limited and typically self-funded, and participants are selected on merit.

The third placement is entirely with a jurisdictional station to ensure you are fully prepared to hit the ground running and start making a difference with your new career.

The Commonwealth Prac Payment offers paramedicine students support while they’re undertaking mandatory placements. From July 2027, eligible students will be able to access $338.60 per week (benchmarked to the single Austudy rate) while they’re undertaking a placement.

Safety in Practice Compliance

This course includes compulsory Professional Experience Placements. You must meet the Safety in Practice Requirements before census date of the first semester of your course. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.

This program of study is currently accredited by the Paramedicine Accreditation Committee and approved by the Paramedicine Board of Australia (the National Board).

Graduates of the program can apply for registration as a paramedic with the National Board via the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (Ahpra) website.

Career outcomes

You will gain the expertise to assess and manage a wide range of clinical presentations in out-of-hospital settings, understanding the importance of informed clinical reasoning in unpredictable environments, and making a positive impact on your community.

Graduating with a Bachelor of Paramedicine will enable you to become a registered paramedic with agencies such as the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) and the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). This qualification allows you to work in various settings, including:

  • State-based ambulance services around Australia and New Zealand
  • International ambulance and healthcare services
  • Community and primary care health services
  • Specialist response teams

The demand for Ambulance Officer and Paramedics is expected to grow by 22.3% by 2033.^

Entry requirements

• To be considered for a first-round offer applications to study in 2027 must be received by 5.00 pm on Wednesday 30 September 2026.

• The standard entry (non-conversion) application submission deadline is 11.59 pm 31 Thursday December 2026.

• Applications for conversion pathways will remain open beyond Thursday 31 December 2026.

Schools Recommendation Program

This course is not included in the Schools Recommendation Program (SRP). You can include this course as a preference in your SRP application, however as entry to this course is very competitive, an early offer through SRP is not available. You will be assessed for this course once your ATAR is released, and may receive an offer accordingly. You may still receive early offers to other preferences you have included.

Tasmanian Quota

Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education

The minimum ATAR for this course is 75.

Applicants are ranked by ATAR and offers made based on the number of places available. In 2026, the lowest ATAR to receive an offer into this course was:

  • 86.65 - Hobart
  • 92 - Sydney

The lowest ATAR to receive an offer may change from year to year based on the number of applications we receive.

Applicants who have recently completed senior secondary studies but have not received an ATAR may still be eligible for admission. We will consider your individual subject results on a case-by-case basis when we assess your application.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have:

  • Completed a course at university Diploma level or higher at any Australian higher education provider (or an equivalent overseas qualification); or
  • Completed at least four units of study (equivalent to 50 University of Tasmania credit points at 100-level or above) of a course at university diploma level (or an equivalent overseas qualification). If an applicant has failed any units, the application may be subject to further review before an offer is made.

Please note that admission to the Bachelor of Paramedicine is highly competitive and that achieving the entry requirements does not guarantee an offer for this course. Applicants who meet the entry requirements are ranked and offers are made based on the number of places available.

Domestic applicants with VET/TAFE study

To be eligible for an offer, applicants must have completed a Diploma of Nursing (the approved program of study for enrolled nurses), or a Diploma of Paramedical Science, or a Diploma of Emergency Health Care, or a combined JMED and Diploma of Nursing (ADF).

Eligibility - Conversion Pathways

Conversion pathways are only available to practicing paramedics and Australian Defence Force Medics. All other applicants are encouraged to consider applying via the Bachelor of Paramedicine standard entry, which is open to applicants from all educational backgrounds.

To be eligible for an offer in a Bachelor of Paramedicine (Conversion Pathway) applicants must:

Have completed a Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Paramedical Science, or a Diploma of Emergency Healthcare, or an equivalent qualification as determined by the College of Health and Medicine; and

Provide a statement from your employer confirming your current employment as a paramedic or Australian Defence Force Medic (ADFMC); and

Have current AHPRA registration in paramedicine without conditions or notations. Note, Australian Defence Force applicants, applicants and Ambulance trainees nominated by Ambulance NSW are exempt from this requirement.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

This pathway is only available to applicants employed as Ambulance trainees by Ambulance NSW and nominated by Ambulance NSW for admission to this pathway and, who meet the ‘Standard’ entry requirements of this course.


All other applicants are encouraged to consider applying via the Bachelor of Paramedicine standard entry, which is open to applicants from all educational backgrounds.

International qualifications

If you have an international qualification this will need to be assessed by an Australian Registered Training Organisation to determine, through a recognition of prior learning assessment, whether or not your qualification is equivalent to an AQF Diploma or Advanced Diploma. Further information about the recognition of prior learning process and a list of Registered Training Organisations who may be able to undertake the assessment are available from the myskills website.

Special Consideration

We believe university education should be an option for everyone, no matter your background. If your ability to access or participate in education has been affected by circumstances beyond your control, you can apply for special consideration as part of your application. We will consider a range of factors, including economic hardship, a serious medical condition, or disability.

We can only approve applications for special consideration if we are confident that you have the necessary skills and knowledge to succeed in your studies. If your application is not approved, the University admissions team will work with you to find the best alternative pathway to your chosen course. Special consideration is not available for international applicants.

Safety in Practice Requirements

This course includes compulsory work placements. All students must meet the course Safety in Practice Requirements before their first placement. The safety in practice requirements are completed separately to the course admission application.

Students who complete the Diploma of University Studies (Paramedicine Foundation Studies) will be eligible to apply for admission to the Bachelor of Paramedicine (53X) with 50 credit points of advanced standing. 

Entry is not guaranteed; applicants will be ranked according to study in the DUS and offers made to fill relevant sub-quotas.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

Commonwealth Supported Place indicative annual fee: $10,233.50

HECS-HELP loans
