The Australian Maritime College’s (AMC) Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours degree will provide you with a combination of core knowledge and transferable skills that are highly valued by employers. Our degree is designed to prepare you for your engineering career with the expertise to pursue one of three maritime specialisations:

Naval Architecture provides student with specialist knowledge and technical skills to design and construct vessels within the shipping, high-speed, offshore, defense, underwater and recreational industries;

Ocean Engineering provides student with specialist knowledge and technical skills to design offshore structures, sub-sea and coastal installations for sustainable development in the maritime environment;

Marine and Offshore Engineering provides student with specialist knowledge and technical skills in design, deployment, commissioning and management of mechanical and mechanical-electrical systems associated with the shipping, marine and offshore oil and gas industries.

You will learn from highly qualified engineers who are committed to delivering a study experience that is practical and industry orientated. In addition to individual and group projects, laboratory work and training in the southern hemispheres most advanced maritime research and training facilities, you will also undertake a minimum of 12 weeks real-life work experience to further develop your skillset in a professional learning environment.

AMC also offers a Bachelor of Engineering (specialisation with Honours) Cooperative. This 5-year course allows you to combine your studies with between 15 and 18 months of practical experience in your chosen specialisation. Working under the supervision of professional engineers, the course allows you to evaluate your career choice and gain industry experience. You will alternate periods of full-time study with periods of full-time paid work experience.

The Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours is a distinctive Maritime Engineering degree and the only of its kind in the Southern hemisphere.

Our Engineering degree is designed to prepare graduates with a broad and coherent understanding of the principles underpinning maritime engineering. In addition to developing technical engineering skills and advanced knowledge in your chosen specialisation, you will also acquire professional soft skills in complex problem solving, critical thinking, decision making, and effective communication. This core knowledge is designed so that no matter where you start your career, you will be able to apply your skills and knowledge to a range of engineering professions across the globe.

  1. NavArch: Rationally apply comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles underpinning maritime engineering, with advanced knowledge of ocean vehicle design, hydrodynamics, ship structures, and/or on-board systems and equipment specific to the naval architecture discipline, using creativity, critical thinking and judgement.

    OceanEng: Rationally apply comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles underpinning maritime engineering, with advanced knowledge of the design of offshore to coastal installations, subsea platforms and additional equipment and techniques for operations in the maritime environment specific to the ocean engineering discipline, using creativity, critical thinking and judgement.

    MarOffEng: Rationally apply comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental principles underpinning maritime engineering, with advanced knowledge of the design, procurement and installation of mechanical, electrical and thermal systems, specific to the marine and offshore engineering discipline, using creativity, critical thinking and judgement.
  2. Apply knowledge of research principles and management methods to devise, plan and execute a piece of engineering research with limited supervision.
  3. Apply problem solving, design and decision-making methodologies to identify complex problems in both the maritime and wider engineering fields and to formulate innovative solutions with intellectual independence.
  4. NavArch: Apply abstraction and analysis to complex problems specific to ship design and construction industries and the wider maritime sector whilst concurrently considering the implications of the solution in a global and sustainable context using appropriate engineering methods and tools.

    OceanEng: Apply abstraction and analysis to complex problems specific to the design and development of offshore, subsea and coastal infrastructure and operations in the wider maritime sector whilst concurrently considering the implications of the solution in a global and sustainable context using appropriate engineering methods and tools.

    MarOffEng: Apply abstraction and analysis to complex problems specific to the maritime engineering industries whilst concurrently considering the implications of the solution in a global and sustainable context using appropriate engineering methods and tools.
  5. Demonstrate a high level of communication skills in professional practice and articulate complex knowledge, by written and oral means, to specialist and nonspecialist audiences; including clients, multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural project teams and stakeholders.
  6. Demonstrate entrepreneurship and creativity, professional accountability and ethical conduct through the application of design, research and project management techniques while concurrently displaying an awareness of professional engineering practice.
  7. Review personal performance, demonstrate independent initiatives and leadership as a means of managing continuing professional development, wellbeing and lifelong learning through engagement with stakeholders, colleagues and members of other professions.

A minimum of 12 weeks real-life work experience is a mandatory requirement of your AMC Engineering qualification. Professional work placements provide students with the opportunity to apply newly acquired skills to a practical working environment. You will also demonstrate advanced knowledge and comprehension of your chosen engineering specialisation.

During this stage of your engineering degree you will demonstrate your ability to resolve complex work-related problems under supervision of qualified engineers. You will engage in various facets of engineering, and can observe and appreciate the attitudes, responsibilities, and ethics expected of engineers.

This work experience is undertaken in the unit JEE493 Engineering Professional Practice.

Naval Architecture

The Bachelor of Engineering (Naval Architecture) with Honours prepares graduates for careers in the shipbuilding industry, designing and constructing luxury super yachts, sailing and power craft, destroyers and patrol boats for the defence industry, underwater vehicles and submarines, and big ocean cruise liners; the high-speed ferry industry; insurance sector; and marine consultancy firms. It is also an excellent gateway to a career in government in the areas of commercial shipping, transport policy and administration.

Ocean Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering (Ocean Engineering) with Honours prepares graduates for careers designing and managing the installation of offshore, subsea and coastal structures for the oil and gas industry, in particular the offshore industry; the renewable energy industry; coastal and environmental engineering; marine consultancy firms; and ocean research organisations.

Marine and Offshore Engineering

The Bachelor of Engineering (Marine and Offshore Engineering) with Honours is unique to AMC and focuses on the design, manufacture, deployment and commissioning of machinery and systems associated with the marine and offshore industries. Marine systems focus on the selection, deployment and commissioning of machinery, mechanical and electrical systems and operational systems designed to support the ship and underwater vehicle industry.

There are many exciting developments being driven by increased fuel costs and the need to lower the environmental impact of vessels and oil rigs. You can get involved in engineering alternative marine power systems or improving crude oil extraction to reduce emissions while maximising yield.

Professional Recognition

The BE(Spec)(Hons) is professionally accredited by Engineers Australia, with the full five year re-accreditation awarded in 2015.  Each BE(Spec)(Hons) specialisation addresses the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competencies for a Professional Engineer.

You will have access to world class training and research facilities, providing you with a competitive edge as graduates.

After your first two years of study you will choose one of three of our Maritime Engineering specialisations:

Naval Architecture

Students who specialise in Naval Architecture will refine their engineering skills with a specialisation in the design and construction of vessels within the shipping, high-speed, offshore, defence, underwater and recreational industries. Our graduates will ensure that Australia stays at the forefront of worldwide high-speed vessel technology.

Marine and Offshore Engineering

A specialisation in Marine and Offshore Engineering equips engineering graduates with a specialist skillset in the design, deployment, commissioning, maintenance, and management of mechanical and mechanical-electrical systems associated with the shipping, marine and offshore oil and gas industries.

Ocean Engineering

If you're interested in studying this degree, you'll need to meet the University General Entry Requirements, and any course-specific requirements.

If you are a Year 12 school leaver

An ATAR score of 70 or higher (or see Alternative entry pathways below) and,

Successful completion of the following prerequisite unit(s) at TQA3 level, or equivalent:

  • Mathematics Methods (MTM415117)
  • A Year 12 Science subject (PHY415115 Physics or CHM415115 Chemistry (or equivalent or higher preferred).
If you're a non-school leaver

An equivalent ranking calculated by your previous qualifications and work experience.

You will also be required to meet the pre-requisites listed above via the completion of foundation units, or by demonstrating equivalent qualification or knowledge.

Even if you don’t need to meet a prerequisite, foundation units are a great way to refresh your knowledge and give you the best preparation possible for staring your Bachelor level studies.

If you are an international student

All international applicants will need to meet the International General Entrance Requirements.

You will also need to meet any course specific requirements with recognised qualifications, or equivalent experience.

You may be eligible for advanced standing (i.e. credit points) in this degree if you:

  • Have completed an award such as a Diploma or Advanced Diploma from TAFE or another institution;
  • Are currently studying another Bachelor degree at the University or at another institution;
  • Have completed a Bachelor degree at the University or an equivalent award from another institution.

Articulation to/from approved exit awards:

Students who have met the requirements for the award of an approved nested exit award (i.e. Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Maritime)) may exit and graduate with that award.

Students who have graduated with an approved nested exit award (Bachelor of Engineering Technology (Maritime)) may later articulate to a higher level nested award with full credit for all units successfully completed under the award, provided that the units were completed no more than 10 years prior to the year of graduation from the higher-level award.  Please note, however, that full credit is contingent on continuation of the same specialisation that was commenced prior to exit. A student may return to the higher level award and pursue an alternate specialisation but will be required to complete all units required by that specialisation and may therefore not receive full credit for units that contributed to the prior specialisation.

Articulation from previous course versions:

Students who have commenced a pre-2018 Bachelor of Engineering course at the Australian Maritime College may also be eligible for full credit for all units successfully completed under the previous course version (towards the Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours or an approved nested exit award), provided that the units were completed no more than 10 years prior to the year of graduation from the new award.

Articulation to/from Co-operative Education program:

Students may articulate between the Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours and the Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours(Co-op) courses with full credit, subject to meeting the applicable admission requirements for course transfer.

Articulation from other, related courses:

Students who have commenced a Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours course or similar in another area at the University of Tasmania or at another institution may receive up to a maximum of 2 years (200 credit points) of advanced standing towards the Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours with AMC, subject to the approval of the Course Coordinator.

2+2 Articulation Agreements:

Students may articulate to the Bachelor of Engineering (Specialisation) with Honours in accordance with the details of any approved 2+2 articulation agreements.

If you successfully complete this course, you may be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research. Filter the Course list by Postgraduate to view the current courses available.

If you meet the minimum ATAR but haven't completed the required pre-requisite unit(s), we offer foundation units to help you bridge the gap. Many run in spring and summer school so you can meet a prerequisite and not delay the start of your Bachelor level studies. HECS scholarships may also be available for domestic students.

If you do not meet the minimum ATAR you should consider enrolment in the Diploma of University Studies (Engineering Specialisation), which includes the mathematics and chemistry foundation units, as a pathway to this degree:

If you do not meet the University General Entry Requirements, you should consider enrolment in the Diploma of University Studies (Engineering pathway) or the University Preparation Program.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic students enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place will be charged a fee based on the number of units they enrol in. In 2020, this fee is $46.20 per unit (of 12.5 credit points). In 2020, the maximum charge for full time students is $308.

International students

2020 Total Course Fee (international students): $168,032 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $38,554 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

* Please note that this is an indicative fee only.

International students

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Scholarships for domestic students

Each year, the University offers more than 900 awards to students from all walks of life, including those who have achieved high academic results; those from low socio-economic backgrounds; students with sporting ability; students undertaking overseas study; and students with a disability.

Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1 open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.
