English Language Requirements

English is the language of instruction at the University of Tasmania. If English is not your first language you will be required to provide evidence that you are able to read, write, speak and understand English to a sufficient standard before commencing their degree.

An application which does not include evidence of your English language ability may still be assessed. If your application is successful, the offer of enrolment will have a condition that you must meet the English language requirements before beginning your degree. You can do this is by taking English languages classes and sitting the assessment exam (e.g. IELTS). Information on English language classes at the University of Tasmania may be obtained from the English Language Centre. Test results must be no older than two years (24 months) old when your degree at UTAS starts.

You are exempt from showing evidence of English proficiency if you can provide evidence that English was the sole medium of instruction and examination in your most recent full-time studies of at least two (2) years duration.

If you are a national of, and are currently residing in a country where English is the official language, and have completed your highest level of studies (senior secondary or tertiary) in that country, you are exempt from the above two year validity period. The University of Tasmania will recognise your previous studies as meeting the English language entry requirement.
