Lucerenmictic Wockener

Aboriginal Life Stories - Clanspeople Encountered

 lucerenmictic

As a Larmairremener clanswoman from the Big River nation Lucerenmictic Wockener was a long way from her country and could have been taken from her clan by Mannalargenna's warriors during a recent raid on the Big River people. Keeper of a bundle of human remains, she carried the remains of three of the warriors who had been killed by soldiers near Campbell Town as an amulet to ward off bad spirits and heal the sick. It was not usual practice for warriors to take women with them on war or raiding forays therefore she was most likely to be a victim of the raid. She died from a fever at the Aboriginal Establishment on Gun Carriage Island on 20 April 1831.
