I figured that if there were prominent UTAS alumni, such as economist Saul Eslake, who were well regarded then there was probably nothing stopping me from achieving my career aspirations.
This on-campus, 1-year full-time or 2-year part-time honours degree course is offered through the Tasmanian School of Business and Economics (TSBE) at Hobart.

Course objectives
The aim of the honours year is to enable you to further develop your research and communication skills and to provide a foundation for postgraduate study in either Economics or Finance.
Learning outcomes
Graduates of the Bachelor of Economics with Honours will be able to:
- Demonstrate advanced theoretical and practical knowledge of economics, and apply the knowledge to make informed judgements and decisions
- Apply advanced techniques to evaluate complex economic problems and assess policy issues
- Reflect on the nature and implications of assumptions and value judgements in economic analysis and policy
- Communicate economic reasoning, present economic knowledge, ideas and empirical evidence both orally and in written form
- Plan and execute an independent research project

Work placement

Talk to your course coordinator about finding an opportunity to take part in a work experience, placement, or extracurricular activities or potentially even a corporate internship during your degree.
Career outcomes
The Bachelor of Economics (Hons) degree opens up many career opportunities and past graduates have established careers in a wide range of activities. Some examples include: central banking, commercial consulting, commercial banking, local government, administration, management, market research, merchant banking, political advising, stockbroking and teaching.
Postgraduate study
If you successfully complete this course, you may be also be eligible to apply for a range of other postgraduate courses including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.
Professional Recognition
While studying students can apply to become student members of the Economic Society of Australia.
Course structure
Candidates are required to complete four units of coursework and to write a dissertation under individual supervision.
The award of honours is given in relation to the whole of the year's work. Grades of award are - First Class; Second Class, upper division; Second Class, lower division; or Third Class.

Entry requirements
Eligibility
Entry to the Bachelor of Economics Honours program is open to students who have completed:
- Bachelor of Economics with Economic Analysis major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units including BEA300, BEA320 and BEA342 with no result at less than a pass; OR
- Bachelor of Economics with Economic Foundations major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units including BEA342 and a minimum of 70 average in BEA200 and BEA220; OR
- Bachelor of Economics with Environmental and Resource Economics major with a minimum of 65 average in four level 300 Economics units including BEA342 and a minimum of 70 average in BEA200 and BEA220; OR
- Equivalent approved program.

Fees & scholarships
Domestic students
Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

International students
2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $30,950 AUD*.
Course cost based on a rate of $30,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).
