The multi-disciplinary field of Health Informatics is the application of information technology to healthcare delivery.

By its very nature, health informatics is challenging and complex. Yet it is this complexity that makes it such an intriguing, exciting and rewarding field in which to be involved.

The Graduate Certificate of eHealth (Health Informatics) is designed for healthcare practitioners. Your studies will focus on the effective use of E-health information for providing practical solutions to improve care delivery and health outcomes.

Demonstrate advanced knowledge of the central role that health informatics and e-health play in contemporary health care by articulating:

  • Contemporary trends, issues, policy and practice in health informatics.
  • Theoretical perspectives that shape the discipline.

Demonstrate advanced cognitive and practical skills by:

  • Applying socio-technical approaches to critically analyse complex problems in the context of health informatics professional practice.
  • Critically analysing social, ethical and legal issues associated with the introduction and use of electronic information systems.

Apply knowledge and skills to:

  • Demonstrate skills, judgement and self-management as a health informatics professional.
  • Promote the growth of health informatics as an academic discipline and a profession.
  • Consolidate and synthesise specialised health informatics disciplinary knowledge and apply that knowledge within their healthcare professional area of practice.

Course structure

This course comprises 4 x 12.5 credit point coursework units and is offered part-time by distance study.

Entry requirements

The course is suitable for health professionals who wish to enhance their understanding and ability to work effectively with information and communication technologies. The course is also designed for graduates who wish to pursue a career as a health informatics specialist.

To be eligible for an offer, an applicant must have:

  • Completed a bachelor’s degree or higher.
  • Two years previous experience working in a health care setting (this includes but is not limited to a hospital, a health clinic, aged care setting, primary health care, department of community services).
  • A Curriculum Vitae detailing minimum two years work experience in the required area of work.

International applicants

This course is not available to international students. Please enquire online for advice on alternative course options.

On completion of the Certificate, students may be eligible to proceed to the H6E Graduate Diploma of E-Health (Health Informatics) (subject to availability of this course). Students who have completed either the Certificate or Diploma program may be eligible to undertake the H7E Master of E-Health (Health Informatics) program (subject to availability of this course).

The programs do not articulate with any other program within the University.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Domestic students enrolled in a full fee paying place are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the fees you pay for each unit you enrol in. Full fee paying domestic students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Detailed tuition fee information for domestic students is available at the Domestic Student Fees website, including additional information in relation to a compulsory Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

International students

2021 Total Course Fee (international students): $8,975 AUD*.

Course cost based on a rate of $17,950 AUD per standard, full-time year of study (100 credit points).

International students

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
