Nutrigrain Comparison

Learning Level: Gr 5-6 Maths Extension Group

Theme Area:

Description: Students compared Nutrigrain and a generic Coles brand that is really similar to Nutrigrain to answer the following two questions: As a consumer, 1) Which of the two cereals is healthier? 2) Which is better value for money? The artefact is a display of their findings including cost per 100g, taste, packaging and analysis of the food labels and their individual responses to the two questions.

Measures of Success: Students understand that, as a consumer, there are multiple ways of evaluating products from both a health and monetary (budgeting) value perspective. Students will be able to explain the information contained on food labels and compare products using this information. They will be able to write a persuasive text explaining their reasoning in response to the two posed questions. Teacher comment: “… I was trying to think about how I could do health literacy with them, so we had two different cereals and we wanted to compare them to see about the nutritional value… So it was really good to think that we could tie it in with our normal maths lesson and make it a real world maths example.”
