Our Zones of Regulation

Learning Level: K-2

Theme Area:

Description: Students across the younger grades in the school learnt about their zones of regulation. Teachers across the younger grades at the school worked together to plan this series of learnings. Each child created a poster which was displayed on the wall throughout the year as a friendly reminder of their new learnings and their personal zones of regulation. The students shared their insight with their peers, teachers, parents and other children (in other grades) across the school. The students were able to describe the Red Zone and that it can be used to describe extremely heightened states of alertness and intense emotions. For example when in the Red Zone they may be elated or experiencing anger, rage, devastation, or terror. They were able to share that the Yellow Zone is used to describe a heightened state of alertness and elevated emotions, however recognised that the child/person has more control when they are in the Yellow Zone. IN the Yellow Zone a person may be experiencing stress, frustration, anxiety, excitement, silliness, the wiggles, or nervousness. The children reported that in the Green Zone they would be in a calm state of alertness. How this would look would be happy, focused, content, or ready to learn. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs and the students were aware of this an keen to practice this in the classroom. Finally they shared that the Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored. Measures of Success: Students are able to identify the different zones of regulation, recognise which zone they may be in at various times in the day or in response to specific events and respond appropriately with a personally designed solution/strategy to manage their emotions.
