Meet Margaret Reid

Born and raised in Launceston, Marg is a passionate and dedicated educator who specialises in woodwind teaching from grass roots level through to the advanced student. She moved to Hobart after Year 11 and became a graduate of the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music, double majoring in Flute Performance and Education. She has since completed post-graduate studies at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, USA, where she developed her love and skills on the saxophone.

During her time at the Conservatorium Marg developed her own teaching studio and performed as an augmenting flute player with the TSO. Marg has continued her performance opportunities, playing in community bands and orchestras, theatre pit orchestras and the odd solo! She has maintained her private studio teaching and enjoys the delights and challenges of working with young children, adolescents and adults alike on a variety of woodwind instruments.

In her private tutoring, Marg sees her lessons with individuals as an opportunity to develop and nurture not just the musical abilities of her students. She views each person’s lesson as a journey to explore their holistic nature and encourages her students to become self-sufficient and motivated learners. Her experiences both as an educator and a performer allow her to cater for each individual’s needs and fulfilment within each lesson.

Marg has spent the past 43 years as a music teacher in Tasmanian High Schools, making a difference to young peoples’ lives through the joy, power and wonder of music. She commits herself to life-long learning and continues to regularly participate in professional learning and playing opportunities.

Marg has now retired from the classroom but is currently undertaking relief teaching when required and is still working in her private teaching studio to make music accessible and fun for people of all ages and backgrounds.
