JOIN US FOR THIS FREE AND ENERGISING EVENT

Teachers are key to the development of our younger generation. The valuable experience they gain from working with teachers will nurture their love of the arts, their abilities as performers,  and the empathy they take forward in their own lives. Teachers are amazing and fuel the passion and enthusiasm of their learners. But that can be exhausting! Join us for a day of recharge and resource. We'll be sharing ideas on how to keep your own cup full, and where you can find support to maximise your teaching time.

Registration is FREE but ESSENTIAL.

Register by the due date (Sun 12 Mar), and attend on the day to go into the draw for a fantastic door prize, valued at over $350!

Who's it for? Teachers!

You don't need to be an AMEB teacher, or even focus on exams with your students. This event will include some information about what AMEB has to offer in terms of resources for teachers but ultimately, we just want to energise and support teachers for the year ahead. Oh, and non-teachers are absolutely welcome, too!

Who looks after teachers?

Unfortunately, teachers usually have to look after themselves.

But being in good nick and looking after yourself is essential for maintaining the energy and enthusiasm teachers give as part of their daily role. Let us help.

We've brought in a local wellness expert to talk about how you can preserve yourself, give you some tangible tools to keep yourself in the best mental and physical shape, and generally remind you that self care matters.

Meet Ben Brockman

Ben completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science from the University of Tasmania in 2011 and started working at Physiotas straight after as an Exercise Physiologist.

Ben’s clinical interests include exercise management of chronic health conditions, particularly Diabetes and Osteoporosis, and educating on the role that exercise and reducing physical inactivity play in improving the health of our community. Running is another big area of interest. Ben is an Athletics Australia Level 2 Accredited Running Coach providing running coaching services along with running focused strength and conditioning training and running injury management.

Outside of work, running, competing mainly in marathons and ultra-distance events are what keep Ben busy. He is the Event Director for Devonport parkrun and parkrun Event Ambassador for North West Tasmania as well as a board member for UTAS Athletics Club. Ben has recently picked up an interest in golf where he’d describe himself as a novice golfer. Outside of running and golf, Ben attempts to manage his Labradoodle puppy (who you might also see at parkrun from time to time!).

Ever wanted to ask about what goes on behind the closed door of the exam room? Now's your chance!

We'll be joined by an expert panel of AMEB Examiners, as well as Head of Publications, Steven Hodgson. Examiners still to be announced but will include Senior Examiner, Dr Jody Heald OAM (piano) and Dr Melissa Rogers (piano).

About Jody Heald

Educated in Sydney at the NSW Conservatorium of Music High School, Jody was a student of the then Professor of Piano and Head of Keyboard, the internationally renowned pianist Gordon Watson AM.  Prior to moving to Tasmania in 1981, she lived on the Central Coast of NSW where she held a lectureship at Newcastle Conservatorium and maintained a large private practice in the Gosford area.

During her years in Tasmania, Jody has undertaken further studies with Beryl Sedivka and established herself as a successful teacher, solo performer, accompanist, and chamber player. Her previous frequent public performances have included ABC broadcasts and University Series concerts. She was for a number of years the pianist for the Hobart-based Piano Trio, Trio Notturno. During 1990, she was a mentor in the Artist-in-Schools Project, working with a wide range of young musicians in a variety of performance situations.

Her successful private practice in Hobart has produced a number of professional musicians who now work throughout Australia and overseas. She maintains a currency of industry knowledge through her keen interest in piano pedagogical practice and has for many years availed herself of the opportunity to observe master teachers at work in leading music schools across Australia, and abroad.

As a professional accompanist Jody has over many years provided co-artist support and coaching to all types of instrumentalists and vocalists. She was employed in that capacity in the Music Department of Elizabeth College Hobart, for 35 years before her retirement in 2014. During that time Jody was also employed as a casual accompanist by the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music.

She is in demand to present masterclasses and lecture-demonstrations both in Tasmania and elsewhere in Australia. Her work embraces performance practice in all instrumental areas and specific piano teaching repertoire and pedagogy.
Jody is a regular adjudicator of many competitions throughout the country and is employed by the Australian Music Examinations Board as a federal examiner for the ATMusA syllabus and state examiner in practical and theoretical subjects. In addition, she has contributed to the AMEB as a specialist consultant in piano and pedagogy syllabus matters.

Jody is a former federal Director on the AMEB Board, former member of the Tasmanian Arts Advisory Board, and former examiner for the Tasmanian Qualifications Authority. She has been the President of the Tasmanian Music Teachers’ Association Inc for more than 25 years and Chair of the Australasian Piano Pedagogy Conference Association since 2005. She is currently a member of the AMEB Tasmanian State Committee, a board member of Musica Viva Tasmania and a national council member of Music Australia.

In 2006 Jody was awarded Life Membership of the Tasmanian Music Teachers’ Association Inc. In 2017 she was awarded the Order of Australia with the citation “For significant service to music education in Tasmania as a teacher, mentor and administrator, and to professional associations”.

In 2020 Jody received her PhD undertaken through Curtin University Perth WA. Her thesis, entitled Pedagogical relationships: A master-apprentice model in music teaching can be found on the Curtin University archive Espace.

Meet Melissa Rogers

Melissa started playing the piano at the age of five, and still loves music. Throughout her school years she studied piano, flute and composition and went on to pursue her passion for music and teaching at tertiary level. Melissa obtained her AMusA and LMusA Diplomas with Distinction and, in 2012, completed her Master of Arts (research) focusing on aural skills and composition. Also that year she was awarded an Associate Diploma of Composition. Her piano compositions have been broadcast on national radio.

Melissa has worked as a secondary teacher in Lismore and also a musicology and music education lecturer at Avondale University College. In 2019 she completed a PhD in musicology from the University of New South Wales receiving the Dean’s Award for Outstanding PhD Thesis. Her work was entitled Revisiting Alfred Hill (1869-1960): Examining Issues of Reception and Compositional Approach.

Melissa currently heads up the high school music department at Launceston Church Grammar School and tutors in the areas of piano and flute. Melissa enjoys organising and performing in chamber music concerts, composing, visiting art galleries, writing, reading, gardening and spending time with her family.

What resources are available to support teachers and their learners? The Head of Publishing from AMEB Ltd is here to share updates on recent releases, the pedagogy and outcomes behind their development, and how AMEB can help you and your students.

Meet Steven Hodgson

Steven Hodgson is the Head of Publishing for AMEB Ltd, a role through which he leads and oversees the review and development of all AMEB syllabuses.
He completed a Bachelor of Music with Honours at the University of Melbourne in 2004, studying composition with Stuart Greenbaum, Brenton Broadstock and Brett Dean, and voice with Stephen Grant. AMEB Tasmania's very own State Manager, Michelle Forbes, will (un)officially launch this exciting new program.

Designed to celebrate and recognise the enormous amount of work that goes on behind the scenes of the performing artists. Participants are required to perform, complete activities that contribute to their community through a variety of means, and achieve an AMEB exam.

The activity requirements are built on the values of:

Leadership / Inclusivity / Community / Collaboration / Independence / Entrepreneurship.

This program is designed to nurture and celebrate those achievements. Be the first to find out more, how to enrol and how you can help your students to grow.
