Sustainability Placement Experience

Gain hands-on experience with sustainability projects while earning credit towards your degree - open to all areas of study.

The Sustainability Placement Experience can be undertaken by students in any bachelor's degree with available electives.

Climate change, social equity, and sustainable development are among the most pressing challenges of our time. As a university deeply committed to sustainability, we believe that every student — regardless of their discipline — should graduate equipped to contribute to a better future.

The Sustainability Placement Experience is your chance to do just that. Open to second and third-year students, this unit gives you the opportunity to step beyond the classroom and into industry, where you’ll help tackle real sustainability issues and build skills that matter for your career, and for the world.

Make a real impact

In this unit, you won’t just learn about sustainability — you’ll live it. Gain hands-on experience in understanding, addressing and providing sustainability-based solutions for government, private, and not-for-profit organisations while learning from professional mentors within the organisations themselves.

From tackling climate resilience to promoting social justice or driving sustainable business practices, you'll help deliver practical solutions that make a difference in Tasmania and beyond.

Learn by doing

University is about more than just learning theory, it's about discovering how to apply that knowledge in the real world. This placement gives you the opportunity to step into a professional environment where you can test ideas, tackle real problems, and see the tangible impact of your learning.

With full support along the way, you’ll gain first-hand insight into how sustainability intersects with your field of study. Develop practical skills, boost your confidence, and deepen your understanding of how your university experience translates to life beyond campus.

Build your career

This is more than just an elective — it’s a step toward your future. You'll build a valuable network of peers and industry contacts, develop skills that employers value, and graduate with meaningful, real-world experience that strengthens your career pathways.

Who can apply?

  • Second or third-year undergraduate bachelor's degree students
