The Bachelor of Education (Primary) is a pre-service teaching degree that prepares you to teach students from Prep to Grade 6. It is accredited by the Tasmanian Teachers Registration Board and recognised in all Australian states and territories. Once you graduate, you’ll be qualified to teach anywhere in Australia.

What you’ll learn

Throughout your degree, you’ll explore core teaching theory and evidence-based practice. You’ll examine child development and behaviour and study the subjects you’ll teach in the classroom.

Your learning will focus strongly on literacy, including speaking, listening, reading and writing. You’ll also develop skills across Mathematics, Science, Health and Physical Education, Art and Music.

Build broad curriculum knowledge

Primary teachers often teach multiple subjects to the same class. This course builds a strong foundation across the full curriculum. In your first two years, you’ll explore teaching fundamentals and gain skills in English, numeracy, arts, HPE and humanities. Later, you’ll select a teaching proficiency to deepen your expertise in a specific learning area.

Inclusive, connected and future focused

You’ll learn that teaching is not just about subjects. It is also about building strong relationships. Our curriculum emphasises inclusivity, wellbeing, sustainability, and Indigenous perspectives across all areas of study. We prepare you to support learners with diverse needs and to work in a wide range of community settings.

Gain real-world experience

As part of your course, you’ll complete 80 days of Professional Experience placements. These give you the chance to put your knowledge into practice in a safe, supportive classroom environment.

This degree is available online across Australia, and on campus in Launceston and at Cradle Coast. You can study full-time or part-time, with flexible options to suit your lifestyle.

Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships

You could be eligible for up to $40,000 from the Australian Government to support your studies through the Commonwealth Teaching Scholarships Program. This initiative is designed to attract high-achieving and passionate individuals to the teaching profession, whether you are a school leaver or changing careers.

The scholarship supports both undergraduate and postgraduate students enrolled in initial teacher education (ITE) programs, helping to ease the cost of study. In return, you will commit to teaching in a government school or government-run early learning setting for a period equal to the length of your course.

With up to 1,000 scholarships available each year until 2028, it is a great time to begin your journey toward a rewarding career in education.

Graduates of this course meet the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST) set by Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership, and are eligible for teacher registration in every Australian state and territory.

Our graduates go on to teach students from Prep to Grade 6 in schools across Australia and overseas. They play a vital role in shaping young minds and making a lasting impact in their communities.

Postgraduate study

Once you complete this degree, you may be eligible to apply for postgraduate study including Graduate Certificates and Graduate Diplomas and Masters by coursework and research.

Course structure

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) requires the completion of 400 credit points including:

  • 350 credit points of core units;
  • a 37.5 credit point teaching proficiency;
  • 12.5 credit points of Elective units and;
  • 80 days of Professional Placement

Your teaching proficiency consists of 37.5 credit points completed across the third and fourth years of your degree. The proficiencies available are:

  • English
  • Mathematics
  • STEM Education
  • Humanities, Social Sciences, and Creative Arts
  • Early Literacy, Languages and Numeracy

All students must successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) in order to graduate the course. Commencing students must attempt the LANTITE in their first year of study and both tests must be successfully passed prior to enrolling in the final Professional Experience unit. Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

Commonwealth Supported Place indicative annual fee: $4,744

How is this calculated?

This is an estimate. The calculation is based on the average full-time enrolment for this course in 2026. All figures are indicative only for 2027. Actual tuition fees will depend on specific unit enrolment, and are subject to annual increases each year. You can find the complete fee details for each unit of study on the individual unit pages. HECS-HELP loans

You may be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.

International students

2027 annual international student tuition fee: $38,250 AUD

The standard year of study for this course is 100 credit points.

Indicative total tuition fee for international students: $ 164,862 AUD.

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.

Domestic scholarships

Domestic Students

Each year, the University offers more than 900 awards, worth an estimated $4 million, to students from all walks of life, including those who have achieved high academic results; those from low socio-economic backgrounds; students with sporting ability; students undertaking overseas study; and students with a disability.

Applications for most awards commencing in Semester 1, open at the beginning of August and close strictly on 31 October in the year prior to study.

HECS Waiver

Fee waivers waive the student contribution amount payable on a Commonwealth Supported Place.
They are sometimes referred to as a HECS Scholarship or HECS wavier.

A Fee Waiver can apply to an individual unit, a semester, a year of study, or the entire degree, dependent on the arrangements agreed to by the University of Tasmania with employers, State government departments, or as offered by the University in specific degree programs.

For all new students, the Fee Waiver application is completed as part of finalising your enrolment, after you have completed your online application for your course.

The closing date for fee waiver applications is the census date applicable to your enrolment.
