Sandy Bay
Set in the suburbs on the edge of bushland reserve, our Sandy Bay campus is within walking distance of the River Derwent, the beach and a local shopping village. Teaching and learning buildings that support a range of disciplines are organised around a central campus heart that hosts eateries, the main library and outdoor spaces for relaxing and socialising. A few minutes' walk will get you to your classes around the site, or if you’re timetabled in Hobart’s CBD, you can catch the free Unihopper shuttle by showing your University of Tasmania student ID. At Sandy Bay, you can also access a vibrant program of student social activities and a range of nearby accommodation options.
Hobart CBD
Our city sites put you in the heart of Hobart. Whether you’re studying alongside the iconic waterfront, in the Midtown, at the Medical Sciences precinct or on The Domain, you’ll have easy access to public transport, eateries, accommodation and plenty of activities for leisure. We've been growing our city presence since 2007, helping embed our students in more central locations closer to business and industry for real-world learning experiences.
The Forest
The Forest on Melville Street in Hobart’s CBD is the University’s newest campus building which has opened to students, staff and the community. It’s equipped with highly adaptable and contemporary multi-use learning spaces that accommodate different teaching modes. While The Forest is home to students and staff from disciplines including Business and Economics, Humanities and Social Sciences, Social Work and University College, its spaces can be enjoyed by all University of Tasmania students.
Hobart City Student Hub
Located in the foyer of the Hobart Apartments on the corner of Elizabeth and Melville Streets, the Hobart City Student Hub provides flexible spaces for individual and group study, a small library collection including a book pick-up and drop-off service, computers and a kitchenette.
You can also connect with members from the UConnect and Student Adviser teams here. The University of Tasmania Tax Clinic can be found on the ground floor.
The Domain
Built in 1910, the Philip Smith Centre has been carefully restored to honour its educational past. It now hosts modern, flexible, technology-enabled learning spaces that will support the University’s educational activities in the city for generations to come.
Also at The Domain is the Nursing building which hosts the University’s School of Nursing in Hobart and Domain House, the original home of the University of Tasmania.
Medical Science Precinct (MSP) and Hobart Clinical School
Home to the Menzies Institute for Medical Research, the Wicking Dementia Research and Education Centre and the School of Medicine. It includes major research laboratories and a clinical research facility.
Nearby, co-located inside the Royal Hobart Hospital, the Hobart Clinical School trains students undertaking the Bachelor of Medical Science and Doctor of Medicine (BMedScMD) to become doctors.
The Hedberg
A state-of-the-art contemporary learning facility, The Hedberg brings together students from Music, and Theatre and Performance.
The building houses purpose-built, soundproof and digitally-equipped rehearsal and practice rooms, an integrated multi-room recording suite, and two key performance spaces – the Recital Hall and the Salon – as well as soundstages and broadcast capabilities.
Hunter Street Centre for The Arts
Hone your creativity in the fully converted, late-19th-century space that once was the iconic Jones & Co. IXL Jams factory.
It’s the Hobart base of our School of Creative and Performing Arts disciplines with students studying Fine Arts and Design on site. Media and Communication is also taught here. The precinct is home to the Plimsoll Gallery and the student-led Sunroom Gallery.
Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS)
IMAS Salamanca is strategically positioned on Hobart’s waterfront at the gateway to Antarctica and the Southern Ocean.
Here, Tasmania's strengths in marine and Antarctic science come together in one precinct, offering opportunities for collaborative research that is of local, national and international significance – and creating exceptional learning opportunities for the next generation of scientists.
The Podium and Excelsior Biscuit Works
The Podium, which is connected to the neighbouring Hytten Hall student accommodation, is now a Student Advising space. Students can attend appointments with Student Advisers, which can be booked online through UniHub.
Next door is the Excelsior Biscuit Works, which has been restored by the University. It is home to Hobart-based members of our Advancement and Alumni teams, which also have a presence at our Inveresk campus inside River’s Edge.
Other learning venues
In addition to our main Hobart campuses, classes are also taught in smaller dedicated facilities around the city, including exciting new upgrades underway at IMAS at Taroona.
