The University of Tasmania Tax Clinic is a community service focused on providing eligible taxpayers with free tax assistance and advice while allowing our students the opportunity to develop their skills.

Supported by the ATO, and under guidance from our experienced tax professionals, students can provide you with quality tax advice or assistance related to everything from:

  • Annual Tax Returns
  • Small Business and Start-up Enquiries
  • Advocacy on tax regulation and legislation
  • A range of other enquiries

Why the Tax Clinic?

The Tax Clinic has been designed to :

  • Provide advice and support for unrepresented or in-need taxpayers
  • Assist in developing practical experience for students as the future of the tax profession
  • Raise awareness and understanding of issues in the current tax system
  • Develop new ways to help people in our community

How we can help

The Tax Clinic proudly provides eligible taxpayers with free professional tax services in:

  1. Complex tax issues on:
    • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
    • Fringe Benefit Tax (FBT)
    • Capital Gain Tax (CGT)
  2. Advocacy in the tax regulation and legislation
  3. Dispute Assist and private rulings
    • Applying for remissions of penalties
    • Negotiating a payment plan with the Tax Office
  4. Individual tax return
  5. Lodgement obligation of Small Business Entities (SBE)

Become an intern

Looking to build your skills and gain real-world experience? The Tax Clinic offers two flexible ways to get involved:

  • Internship (for course credit): Perfect if you want hands-on experience that counts toward your degree (via units like BFA304 or BFA739).
  • Volunteering (non-credit): Great if you're looking to gain experience without the pressure of assessments.

Both options involve a minimum commitment of one day per week in the clinic, plus a weekly training session.
