The Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) equips you to enhance your healthcare contributions and fulfill professional development needs through a flexible online study.

The course has been developed with health industry partners and features a strong inter-disciplinary approach, drawing on content from a broad range of disciplines across the University of Tasmania, with an emphasis on providing you with the flexibility to choose content that best progresses your career ambitions.

You'll build a strong foundation in leadership skills and critical thinking, helping you to analyse and resolve the complex problems that you face in the health system. You can then choose from a curated selection of units expanding your knowledge in fields including epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, health service innovation, health informatics and digital health.

Webinar topics cover the breadth of our Advance Practice specialisations, as well as the core topics of leadership, and critical thinking. There are options to explore a new topic, or dive into something you are already familiar with and expand your knowledge.

The Master of Advanced Practice has been co-designed with major health providers for the health workforce, providing knowledge and skills specifically developed to meet the needs of health professionals from all disciplines. We prepare you to hit the ground running when you graduate by giving you a study experience directly related to where you may find a career. You will be able to apply advanced methods in a range of disciplines, identify problems, gather evidence, and form and communicate your conclusions based on research and experience. This is why the Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) is one of the most sought-after qualifications by employers. When you graduate you will be prepared for the workforce.

Course structure

Students must successfully complete 11 units (150 credit points) which consists of:

  • 25 credit points of core units and 25 credit points of choice units (Grad Cert), and
  • 50 credit points from the specialisation (Grad Dip), and
  • 50 credit points research or capstone pathway (Masters).

Domestic applicants who recently completed secondary education
This course does not admit students on the basis of secondary education.

Domestic applicants with higher education study

To be eligible for an offer, you must have:

  • A completed AQF7 Bachelor Degree or above, or approved equivalent in a health-related discipline; OR  
  • A completed AQF7 Bachelor Degree or above, or approved equivalent, in an unrelated discipline AND a minimum of two years relevant work experience in the health sector.

Domestic applicants with VET / TAFE study
This course does not admit students on the basis of VET / TAFE study.

Domestic applicants with work and life experience

Applicants who do not meet the admission requirements for direct entry to the Master of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) may gain alternate entry through approved relevant work experience in the health industry (minimum of 3 years), or other special circumstances, as approved by the Dean Learning and Teaching Performance Health or delegated authority.

Admission to most postgraduate coursework courses at the University of Tasmania require qualifications equivalent to an Australian bachelor degree. Applicants must achieve the required grade in their qualifying studies, meet any prerequisite subjects, and meet English language requirements to be eligible for an offer.

English Language Requirements

For students who do not meet the English Language Requirement through citizenship, evidence of an approved English language test completed within the last 2 years must be provided.

English Language Minimum Test Score Requirements:

  • IELTS 6.5 (no individual band less than 6.0)
  • TOEFL (iBT) 88 (Reading 16; Listening 16; Speaking 18; Writing 22)
  • PTE Academic 58 with no score lower than 50
  • Cambridge English C1 Advanced 176 with no less than 169 in any skill

Course Specific Requirements

  • A completed AQF7 Bachelor Degree or above, or approved equivalent in a health-related discipline; OR  
  • A completed AQF7 Bachelor Degree or above, or approved equivalent, in an unrelated discipline AND a minimum of two years relevant work experience in the health sector.

Students with a completed Graduate Certificate in a health-related field may receive up to 50 credit points of advanced standing.

Students who have completed the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Practice may receive 50 credit points of advanced standing.

Students who have completed the Graduate Diploma of Advanced Practice (Specialisation) may receive 100 credit points of advanced standing.

Fees & scholarships

Domestic students

Commonwealth supported places (CSP) are available for this course. For eligible domestic students, this means your fees will be subsidised by the Australian Government. You’ll only need to pay the student contribution amount for each unit you study within the course.

Commonwealth Supported Place indicative annual fee: $10,208

How is this calculated?

This is an estimate. The calculation is based on the average part-time enrolment for this course in 2026. All figures are indicative only for 2027. HECS-HELP loans

You may be able to defer payment of the student contribution amount by accessing a HECS-HELP loan from the Government. If eligible, you’ll only have to pay your tuition fees once you start earning above a specific amount.

An important note on Youth Allowance and Austudy

The Department of Social Services has approved some accredited and professionally-oriented master’s courses for student payments through Youth Allowance or Austudy. This means if you enrol in one of these courses, you may be eligible for student payments. However, this is not the case for all master’s courses. International students

2027 annual international student tuition fee: $9,475 AUD

The standard year of study for this course is 50 credit points.

Indicative total tuition fee for international students: $ 28,899 AUD.

International students are charged the Student Services and Amenities Fee but this fee is incorporated in the annual rate. International students do not have to make any additional SSAF payments.
