The university of Tasmania Tax Clinic can provide free advice on taxation matters.

Eligibility

You are eligible to receive assistance from the University of Tasmania if you:

  • Do not have a tax agent (are unrepresented). However, if the client wants a second opinion, the client may be eligible for our service
  • Are a student, individual, or small entity
  • Have a taxable income threshold of $60,000 or below
  • Exceptional circumstances: The tax clinic may be able to assist if the above criteria are not met. This may include, but not limited to:
    • The client is experiencing a significant decrease in their income
    • The client is experiencing financial hardship
    • The client has a dispute with ATO and/or is unsure how to respond to the ATO, including Notice of Objection
    • The client has a tax debt to the ATO and negotiation is necessary

Application

To apply for assistance, please complete the online application form below. Alternatively, please contact us via phone (+61 3 6226 6118) or email (tax.clinic@utas.edu.au) to discuss your matter with one of our student volunteers. Please advise if your matter is urgent, and we will try to prioritise your application.

Review

You will be notified of our outcome once we review your application. Should your application prove successful, we will ask you to attend our offices for an initial meeting.

Meeting and assessment

The meeting will involve a representative from the student volunteers, with the assistance of the UTAS Tax Advisor, depending on your situation. At the meeting, we will advice on our capacity to assist you or provide an alternative recommendation.
